A review of recent data from multiple sources shows that WhatsApp has surpassed three billion monthly active users worldwide.
WhatsApp is used across 180+ countries and supports more than 60 languages, making it one of the most widely adopted communication platforms globally.
With those numbers, and as a platform built on a simple premise of instant, direct communication, it’s highly likely your audience is already on WhatsApp. It’s easy to send, receive, and track messages, and might be worth considering further as a channel.
But coming back to a much-loved phrase. “It depends.”
Real -time, real – life communication
When confirming bookings, onboarding clients, or sharing VIP news or instant offers, WhatsApp can be ideal to connect with clients, customers, and colleagues in a way that feels human and conversational, rather than corporate or transactional, helping to build relationships and trust.
Personal or Business
With a personal account, WhatsApp is currently free to use. And unlike SMS or email tools and software, you can share videos, PDFs, and even images, all from your phone and all in one click. Cost -free, and restriction- free too.
If you are considering one-to-one, informal communication, quick check -ins, and low – volume messaging where speed and familiarity matter more than structure, a personal account may suit.
WhatsApp Business, on the other hand, is built for more intentional use. It includes tools such as business profiles, automated messages, and conversation labels, which can help organise enquiries, manage responses, and separate work communication from personal chats. Costs will depend on your usage and goals.

Updates that update
Forget battling another algorithm, as with so many other social media channels that marketers are expected to navigate and master right now. WhatsApp Broadcast Lists let you post updates, target offers, and share content directly with the right people at a time they are likely to see it.
Note. Check your costs for this against what is right for you, your business, and your audience.
Automation over admin
Upgrade from a personal account to WhatsApp for Business, if the cost is right, and you can use your app to automate replies and responses that induct and inform your contacts as needed, 24/7. And in the world of marketing, where the expectation of your role is forever far reaching, reduced and simplified admin is only ever a good start.
Pause for thought
The direct approach can be powerful. However, if it is not positioned or paced carefully, it could disengage rather than bring your clients or customers closer.
First steps. What is your strategy? And how much time and resource do you realistically have to manage it well?
