How to Smash Your Next Interview

Got an interview coming up and feeling the nerves creeping in?

Whether you’ve not had an interview for donkey’s years, or are a veteran of the process, when it comes to the day, it can still bring on that cocktail of terror and excitement.

But here’s the good news: you can prepare your way to confidence. With the right prep and mindset, you can walk in (or log on) with your head high, ready to show them exactly why you’re the superstar they’ve been looking for.

Here’s how to get ready and absolutely smash your next job interview.

Prep Like a Pro

Winging it is not a strategy. Yes, you want to be natural, but “natural” is easier when you’ve done the groundwork.

Start with the basics:

  • Do your homework – Have a proper nose around their website, socials, and any press they’ve had. Find out who they help, what they stand for, and what they’ve been up to.

  • Re-read the job spec – Highlight the bits that make you think, “Yep, I’ve done that” or “I’d love to do that.” Match your experience to what they’re actually asking for.

  • Plan your journey/tech check – No one needs the stress of a last-minute train panic or a laptop meltdown. Give yourself breathing room.

  • Prep your own questions – Remember, you’re interviewing them too. Ask about the team, the culture, what a typical day looks like—anything that helps you decide if it’s the right fit.

Top tip: You don’t need to memorise a script, but having a few key points in your back pocket makes all the difference.

Confidence Boosters Before You Go In

That jittery, slightly sick feeling? Totally normal. But you don’t have to let it run the show.

Try these:

  • Stand like a superhero:  Seriously. Shoulders back, chin up. A quick power pose in the loo or by your desk before the call can shift your mindset.

  • Breathe: Deep, slow breaths help calm the nervous system and keep you grounded.

  • Hype yourself up:  Make a quick list of three things you’ve achieved in your career. Remind yourself you’ve got this.

  • Wear something that makes you feel good:  Even if it’s a Zoom call, feeling sharp makes a difference.

You’ve done the work. You know your stuff. Back yourself.

Nail Your Answers with the STAR Method

When they ask, “Can you give an example of when you managed a tricky project?”, your brain might initially freeze. That’s where STAR swoops in to save the day:

  • Situation – What was happening?

  • Task – What was your responsibility?

  • Action – What did you do?

  • Result – What changed as a result?

STAR helps you tell a story that’s structured, relevant and easy for an interviewer to follow. Keep it punchy. Own your role in the success. No need to be shy.

Take a little look at the job spec and think about situations where you demonstrated some of the skills or experience required.

And yes, it’s fine to jot down a few bullet points in advance if it’s a virtual interview. No one’s judging.

If You Get Stuck.

Blank mind. Awkward silence. Panic rising.

We’ve all had that moment where a question “throws” us.

Here’s what to do:

  • Take a pause:  It’s OK to say, “That’s a great question – let me think for a moment.”

  • Ask for clarity:  If you’re not sure what they’re getting at, ask. It shows you’re thoughtful, not clueless.

  • Be honest: If you haven’t done exactly what they’re asking, share something similar and how you’d approach it.

Remember, interviewers don’t want to “catch you out.” They want to understand how you think and whether you’d be a good fit for them to work with.

Smashing your next interview isn’t linked to perfection. It’s about being prepared, staying calm under pressure, and showing your true self.

So prep properly, bring your best energy, and don’t forget: they’ve invited you to the interview. You already impressed them, so now it’s just about sealing the deal.

And if it doesn’t work out? It’s still progress. Every interview builds your confidence and helps sharpen your story.
